I’m trying to improve my car knowhow—I drive every day, I should know something about my vehicle. I’ll start with a simple one: what holds the wheels on a car?

Good question! The wheels are housed in the wheel well and attached to the hub, which is attached to the axle.
  • The wheel well is the space that the wheel rests in. These are part of the car’s frame.
  • The wheels are attached to the wheel hub. These connect the wheel to the car.
  • The wheel is attached to the hub by five wheel nuts.
  • The wheel hub is attached to the axle.
  • The axle is the central shaft of the car. It controls the movement of the wheels, allowing the car to turn.
