What happens if you put sugar in engine oil?

A friend of my cousin told me that ten year ago the valedictorian of his high school had his brand new F-150 wrecked because the class salutatorian put sugar in his tank. Can that story really be true? What happens if you put sugar in engine oil?

Wow, that fourth-hand tale sounds like the plot of a B horror flick. In reality, not a lot happens if you put sugar in engine oil.
Why won’t sugar do much harm? Because sugar doesn’t dissolve in gas, it won’t go through the engine (but it will sit in a blob at the bottom of a gas tank). In addition, cars and trucks today have filters that block debris from getting to the engine.
In a case like the one you are describing, the valedictorian’s fuel filter might have gotten clogged up by the sugar. Yes, the filter would need replacing, but that would likely be the end of the damage.
So, you were right to be skeptical of the story!
