What happens if I fail my driving test in Texas?

I’ve been studying and practicing for my driving test nonstop. I’m the last of my friends to turn 16, so I’m eager to finally get my license. I can’t help but worry—what if I fail the test?

It’s normal to be nervous about your driving test, but the news is that even if you fail your first attempt at a driving test in Texas, you’ll be able to retake it three more times within 90 days.
The $25 driving test fee includes the cost of your
Texas driver’s license
and two additional attempts.
Note that every retest will cost $7. If you don’t pass the driving test after three attempts, you’ll need to pay an additional $25 and start over.
That said, study and prepare for your driving test before the big day by reviewing the Texas Driver Handbook. You can access a free copy online at www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense in “Handbooks & Forms” or get a copy at your local Texas driver's license office. Practice all the driving maneuvers listed in the “Driver Safety Checklist” before you schedule your road test.
The driving test takes about 20 minutes. Your instructor will be watching your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and obey traffic laws, and you’ll be graded on the following maneuvers:
  • Backing in a straight line
  • Parallel parking
  • Approaching intersections
  • Turning
  • Stopping in regular traffic conditions
  • Controlling the vehicle
  • Observing traffic
  • Maintaining vehicle position (turning, stopping, etc.)
  • Using signals
Remember that there are a few things that can result in an automatic failure:
  • Violating the law
  • Refusing to follow your examiner’s instructions
  • Driving dangerously or crashing your car
Also, remember that once you pass your driving test, you’ll need to get yourself situated with a
