Encore is a subcompact SUV and, in fact, one of the smallest crossovers you can buy. Plus, it’s equipped with a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that’s pretty great on gas. This 155-horsepower engine will deliver adequate pep, despite not being overly exciting. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but you can upgrade to all-wheel-drive for just $620.
With the front-wheel-drive option, you’ll get an EPA-estimated rating of 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The Encore’s all-wheel-drive option gives you more traction—which is appropriate for snowy and icy roads—at only a minor cost. EPA estimates losing just a little bit of efficiency, offering 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
