What does a Texas driving permit look like?

I work at a liquor store and have to check licenses to ensure I’m not selling drinks to minors. I know people over 21 can have learner’s permits, but just so I am aware, what does a Texas driver’s permit look like?

To recognize a Texas driving permit, look for a vertical license. A Texas driving permit for someone who doesn’t have their full license yet is vertical in shape and has a clear label of “learner driver license” in the upper right.
A learner's permit is a good place to start for drivers who want to practice their driving skills but aren’t eligible for a full
Texas driver’s license
.
But before you apply for one, you’ll need to meet the eligibility criteria. When applying for a
Texas learner permit
, the Department of Public Safety requires the following:
  • One document showing proof of identity (original or certified copy of birth certificate)
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • Proof of Texas state residency
  • Current enrolled in school (teens under 18)
  • A completed Verification of Enrollment and Attendance form (teens under 18)
  • Pass a written test, either at the DPS or in an online driver education course
  • Pass a vision test
The requirements to obtain a learner’s permit can be complicated, so you’ll want to confirm with the
Texas Department of Public Safety website
for the details and process.
