What causes the RPM to fluctuate when driving?

Why do the RPM readings in my car fluctuate while I’m driving? It’s just started happening recently and I’m not sure if it’s something that I need to be worried about.

While you probably don’t need to be overly worried about your RPM readings fluctuating when you’re driving, it might be a good idea to
talk to a mechanic
about the problem. This is because there are a few different potential causes for this issue, including:
  • Worn-out spark plugs (these are the most likely cause for the issue)
  • A defective idle air control (IAC) valve
  • A faulty sensor
  • Dirt or grime on your fuel injector
  • Transmission issues
Some of these problems are more serious than others, so it’s best to get the issue addressed as soon as possible.
