background
Whether you’re a new transplant to the Hoosier State or just moving down the road, you’ll need to inform the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) of your new
Indiana
address. Once you establish residence, you’ll have 30 days to contact the BMV with the appropriate documents to verify your change of address.
It’s no secret that many of us find moving to be a tiresome endeavor. Once it’s all over, you probably just want to collapse into your bed and sleep for a few days. Before you commit to your extended rest, there’s one final thing you need to accomplish: notifying the proper agencies of your new address.

How to change your address on an Indiana driver’s license

Taking a trip to the BMV might not seem like the most enjoyable way to spend an afternoon, but that’s exactly what you’ll have to do to get your change of address squared away.
Unfortunately, there is currently no online option for this process, so you’ll have to visit a BMV location in person to get it done.

If you’re moving within Indiana

Moving from one place in Indiana to another still requires a proper change of address, whether you’re making the trek from Gary to Bloomington or just moving around the corner in South Bend.
For each customer, the Indiana BMV keeps two addresses: a residential address and a mailing address. Out of these two, the residential address is technically more important because it verifies your fixed place of residency within the state.
After you finish moving, you’ll have 30 days to visit an Indiana BMV in person to update your residential address. To corroborate the information, you will need to bring two approved forms of identification with you
Acceptable documents will contain your name and address, including:
  • Bill from a credit card company, utility company, doctor, or hospital
  • Bank statement
  • Paystub (pre-printed)
  • Medicaid/Medicare benefit statement
Updating your address is free, but getting an
Indiana driver’s license
with your new address will cost you $9.
The second address kept by the BMV is your mailing address. This is used by the BMV to send your correspondence through the mail and can either be the same as your residential address or a different location.
Unlike your residential address, your mailing address can be
updated online
, although it can be done in person, as well.

If you’re moving to Indiana from another state

Out-of-state moves are a bit trickier when it comes to the change of address process.
When you first establish a new residence in Indiana, you will have 60 days to go through the application process to get a new driver’s license. It’s also required that you surrender your credentials from other states (ID card, driver’s license, etc.).
When you come to the BMV to begin the application, you have to bring one of the following three items with you:
  • Your out-of-state driver’s license
  • A copy of your
    driving record
  • A letter of verification
In addition, you will have to bring documents that prove your identity and citizenship. You will also have to take a vision screening and might be asked to pass a driving and/or knowledge test, depending on the status of your driver’s license before your address change.
Lastly, you will have 60 days to apply for a new vehicle title or submit the relevant forms to get one. This must also be done in person.
When you make your way to the BMV branch to apply for a title and
vehicle registration
, you will need to bring a few things with you:
  • Inspection of
    VIN
(this can be done at the BMV if your vehicle is present)
  • Proof of address
  • Proof of your full Social Security number (SSN) or Federal Identification number (FIN) might also be required

Other steps for an Indiana change of address

Although not related to driving, it is very important that you also notify the Post Office (USPS) of your new address so that you don’t miss any important bills, packages, or paperwork. Make sure you fill out your
change of address form
as quickly as possible.

How to notify your insurance company of your Indiana change of address

Now that the BMV is properly informed and your mail is being suitably delivered, the final thing you need to do is notify your insurance provider of your change of address. Usually, this is as easy as giving your agent a call, although there are plenty of apps and online options you could take advantage of.
You need to keep your insurance provider properly informed because you could easily end up losing coverage or having your
policy lapse
. The last thing you want is to get into an accident and find out your policy doesn't comply with
Indiana's car insurance laws
. This could easily result in fines and loss of driving privileges.
Keep in mind that insurance providers often use your location to determine their rates. You could even be charged with fraud if you move without telling your insurer, so get them up to speed as soon as you touch down in your new home!
