What are the symptoms that my engine oil is too thin?

I just bought my first car and changed the oil myself. However, my engine now sounds strange and now I’m worried that I added oil that’s too thin for the car. If my engine oil’s too thin, what are the symptoms?

We’re sorry to hear that you’re having
difficulties with the engine
.
If the engine oil’s too thin, symptoms you may experience include:
  • Engine ticking
  • The smell of burning oil, especially in
    hot weather
  • Low oil pressure
Additionally, overly thin oil can cause reduced lubrication, which shortens the life of your engine.
Every manufacturer recommends certain kinds of oils that work best with their engines, so it’s a smart idea to consult your owner’s manual or online resources to find out what engine oil your vehicle needs.
If you think you have the wrong oil in your engine, the best practice is to perform a new oil change and add in the correct oil.
