While some hotels and resorts offer free shuttle services to-and-from the airport, other transportation options can be quite costly. And while guided tours can be a great way to learn about Hawaii while exploring, booking daily tours can be time and cost-prohibitive—especially if you’re traveling with an entire family.
Furthermore, if you’re looking to head out to remote attractions—like towering hikes, cascading waterfalls, or isolated rainforests—you could end up stranded without a rental car (after all, flagging down a cab in the rainforest doesn’t sound very easy).
Additionally, the only public transportation options in Hawaii are via bus. There are no trams, trains, trolleys, or subways. Plus, bus routes are only available on the four major islands: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii (Big) Island. You won’t find any on Lanai or Molokai.
