Is obstructing traffic a moving violation in NJ?

Thanks to some heavy congestion, I got caught in an intersection and stopped for obstructing traffic. The officer didn’t give me much information when she wrote the ticket. Is traffic obstruction considered a moving violation in New Jersey?

Unfortunately, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) considers the obstruction of traffic a moving violation. A ticket comes with a $54 fine and two driver violation points on your driver’s license, which will remain on your driver abstract indefinitely.
Driver violation points can raise your car insurance rates
, and if you receive a total of six within three years, you could be subject to a surcharge by the NJMV. All in all, moving violations cost a pretty penny!
Luckily, there are several ways to remove points from your driver’s license in New Jersey:
  • Drive safely for 12 months without receiving any new violations or driver’s license suspensions to remove three points
  • Complete a state-approved
    defensive driving course
    to remove two points
  • Complete a Driver Program, such as the Driver Improvement Program (DIP) or Probationary Driver Program (PDP), to remove three points
Either way, you’ll have to be on your best behavior. Safe driving!
