Is it illegal to use GPS on my phone while driving?
I use Google Maps on my phone to go just about everywhere. However, I know some states will give you a ticket if you use your phone. Can I use the GPS on my phone while driving?

Using GPS on your phone while driving may or may not be legal. It depends on how you’re using it and where you’re driving.
In states that don’t allow cell phone use, using GPS on your phone is illegal. In states that allow cell phone use, you shouldn’t have an issue.
While the charge may be called something different where you live, using your phone for GPS while driving is often considered
distracted driving
, and it could cost you a few hundred bucks. And even in states where using your phone is legal, using GPS by holding your phone is not recommended. By doing so, you’re creating an unsafe atmosphere for yourself and others.Regardless of where you live, the best option is to:
- Use a phone mount so you don’t have to look down to check your GPS. This is especially helpful on vehicles that don’t have a modern navigation system or touchscreen display.
- Use your car’s navigation system.
- Connect your phone to the car’s head unit via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or Bluetooth. This will allow you to use Waze, Google Maps, and other popular map apps to get where you need to go.
