If the exhaust pipe broke off the muffler, can I still drive the car?

My car is a bucket of rust but it gets me where I need to be. Unfortunately, last night I hit a curb and the exhaust pipe broke off the muffler. Can I still drive my car?

Oh no! Your car will still be drivable without the muffler, but I recommend parking your vehicle until it can be fixed or replaced.
The most immediate consequence of driving without a muffler is getting a ticket for faulty equipment. Driving a car in that condition is illegal, and since your vehicle will be
incredibly noisy
without a muffler, the policy will likely notice and pull you over.
Your car will also be emitting carbon monoxide and other gasses that will overwhelm your senses, and not in a good way. Your vehicle will get stinky—fast!
Lastly, driving without a muffler costs more money in the long run. The fuel efficiency will drop, and the chances of developing an exhaust or engine problem will rapidly increase. Have a local mechanic take a look, and hopefully, they can weld the muffler back on.
