Your car’s periodic oil changes are essential, but they can really start to chip away at your wallet. At around $70 a pop, changing your 2020 Nissan Rogue’s oil can really start to add up.

2020 Nissan Rogue engine oil capacity

Before we get into oil types, let’s clear this up: how much engine oil does your 2020 Nissan Rogue even need?
A 2020 Rogue’s 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine has an oil capacity of 4.8 quarts or 4.6 liters. It’s easy to get the 2.5-liter and 4.6-liter figures confused, so know they are not interchangeable.
The 2.5-liter figure refers to your engine displacement or the volume your engine's cylinders take up. The 3.8-liter oil capacity is the amount of oil your engine needs during an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2020 Nissan Rogue need?

Now that we’ve covered how much oil your 2020 Nissan Rogue needs, we now need to tackle the next question: what kind of oil does your engine need?
You can’t just order the first 5-quart bottle you see in stock on Amazon—different oils are specifically engineered to work in different engine types. Meaning, the kind of oil an Aston Martin or Bugatti needs will be different from the kind you put in your Nissan.
For the 2020 Rogue, Nissan recommends that you use SAE 0W-20 full synthetic oil
If that oil type looks like a whole lot of mumbo jumbo to you, let’s put it in simpler terms. The SAE at the beginning just stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, the official entity that codes and classifies oil types. The numbers represent the oil’s viscosity, or its thickness, and the “W” stands for winter
The 0 before the W indicates that the oil flows thinner at 0°F, meaning that in cold temperatures it won’t clog up and create friction. The 20 at the end also indicates that the oil remains thin at the engine’s optimal running temperature of 212°F.
Basically, you need an oil that will perform well during extremely cold temperatures and maintain a low enough viscosity not to clog up your engine—and SAE 0W-20 foots the bill for a 2020 Nissan Rogue.
When shopping for this kind of oil, you’ll probably encounter two different kinds: detergent and synthetic. What’s the difference? Detergent oil is just natural oil with added chemicals that help prevent rust, sludge, and oil deterioration.
Synthetic oil, on the other hand, is entirely chemical. You can use detergent or synthetic oil for your 2020 Nissan Rogue, as long as it’s SAE 0W-20 oil.

How often to change oil on a 2020 Nissan Rogue

Congrats! Now that you’re a pro on your 2020 Nissan Rogue’s oil capacity and type, you’re ready for the next question: when should I get my oil changed?
Nissan recommends that you swap out a 2020 Rogue’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles driven. Or, if you don’t drive your car a whole lot, we’d suggest you set a calendar reminder in your phone for every six months
Sometimes, you’ll need to change it a little ahead of schedule. We’d suggest you check on your oil level at regular intervals, like once a month or at every other refuel, and keep an eye (and an ear, and a nose) out for the following signs you need fresh oil:
  • Motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black (clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil is like a cup of soda)
  • Coarse or gritty feeling motor oil
  • Strange noises coming from the engine
  • An oil, smoke, or burning smell when you’re opening your car
  • Decreased vehicle performance (e.g., decreased fuel economy, sputtering)

How to change your oil and filter

If it’s time for an oil change, you’ll need the following materials:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • Replacement oil filter
  • 5 quarts of 0W-20 engine oil
To begin, run your engine until it reaches its normal operating temperature (this should take about five minutes). After that, turn your engine off,
open the hood
, and do the following:
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Go underneath your engine (we’d recommend using a
    mechanic's creeper
for this) to remove the oil drain bolt and washer. Let the old oil drain into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter while old oil is draining onto the drain pan
  • Install the new oil filter once all the old oil has drained out
  • Replace the old oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten it
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and use a dipstick to check and make sure you’ve added enough
  • Re-screw the oil filter cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Now, turn on your car for a couple of minutes and look for any leaks. If all is well, the oil pressure light on your dashboard should click off.
When you’re cleaning up, don’t just throw away your dirty oil or dump it down the drain. Pour it into a sealed container and bring it to your local recycling center so they can dispose of it properly.
