How to find out if someone has car insurance?
How can I find out if someone else has car insurance? Someone hit my car the other day, and I got their license plate number. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any of their insurance information.

I’m sorry to hear that someone hit your car; that’s really frustrating. But it’s great that you have their license plate number! With that, you can use one of three methods to find out if the other driver has car insurance:
- You can contact the police and request the other driver’s insurance information. They’ll be able to find it from the license plate number. But you’ll also need to provide them with a valid, verifiable reason for requesting someone else’s information. Since someone hit your car, you should be able to get the information you need.
- Another option is to contact the DMV. To request information, you’ll need to give them a report on the accident along with a verifiable purpose for the request. If you give inaccurate or outdated information, the DMV may deny your request—so make sure everything you tell them is up to date.
- Finally, you can get in touch with your provider. If you give them the license plate number, they’ll run it through their system and get in touch with the other driver’s insurer. Remember, this is why you pay for insurance—let them handle it!
