How often should a car be detailed?

For my 19th birthday, my dad gifted me his old car. I want to practice good maintenance to maintain the condition of my car. How often should I get my car detailed?

What a lovely gift from your dad! Practicing good
maintenance
is crucial to keeping your car in the best condition and prolonging its life.
The rule of thumb is to do a quick detail once a month to maintain the vehicle. A quick detail includes:
  • Washing and wiping down all glass windows and alloys
  • Washing the exterior
  • Wiping down the door jambs
  • Reapply paint protector using wax or detailer spray
  • Applying a tire dressing to restore the appearance
  • Vacuuming the interior
That said, opt to get a full detail done every six to twelve months. A full service includes:
  • Washing the exterior of the vehicle
  • Buffing and waxing the exterior of the car
  • Vacuuming and applying treatment to the interior of the car
  • Cleaning and wiping the vent, windows, and door jamb
  • Cleaning the engine
