I’m buying a car on my own for the first time and I’ve decided to go with a Nissan Altima. The dealership is suggesting I get an extended warranty but I’m not sure if the price they’re giving me for the extra protection is worth it.

extended warranty varies in cost depending on the Nissan model you drive, its age, and its mileage—but you can anticipate paying around $2,200 for an extended warranty on a newer model Altima
. This will last eight years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. Nissan’s extended warranty plans are called Security+Plus extended protection plans and are available in the following tiers:
- Powertrain Preferred—this plan will cover more than 839 vehicle components
- Silver Preferred—this plan will cover an additional 690 vehicle components
- Gold Preferred—this plan will cover almost all vehicle components plus other benefits like roadside assistance and rental car reimbursement
Keep in mind that Nissan offers a 3-year/36,000-mile factory warranty. While your vehicle is under warranty, you will need to have all covered maintenance completed at a Nissan dealership.
