Overview: what is a Mazda extended warranty?

If you buy a new Mazda, it comes with an original factory warranty. This is essentially the Japanese automaker’s guarantee to fix any defects or poor workmanship on the car’s main components, so long as these problems crop up within the original warranty’s timeframe.
Mazda’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty offers bumper-to-bumper coverage for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Mazda also offers a Powertrain Limited Warranty, which lasts for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Buying an extended warranty stretches that coverage to a total of 9 years or 100,000 miles.
If you want to buy an extended warranty to protect your Mazda once the factory warranty runs out, you can purchase an extended warranty at any point. You can buy a Mazda extended warranty while your factory warranty is still valid or after it expires. Most automakers stipulate that an extended warranty must be purchased before the original warranty runs out, so Mazda’s option to buy one later is rather rare.

Mazda Extended Warranty: coverage and cost

Under the umbrella of the Mazda Extended Confidence Program, you have two options if you want to buy an extended warranty—the Powertrain Confidence plan or the Total Confidence plan.
The Powertrain Confidence plan covers the same components as your original powertrain warranty, including your engine and transmission.
The Total Confidence plan is more comprehensive, offering coverage for nearly everything that is covered under your original factory warranty.
Beyond each plan’s coverage specifics, they the following perks to Mazda drivers:
  • 24/7 Emergency Roadside Assistance—including towing to the nearest Mazda dealership, battery jumpstarts, fuel deliveries, flat tire service, lockout service, trip interruption service, winching, computerized trip planning service
  • Use of authentic Mazda parts for all repairs
  • Trained Mazda technicians to repair your vehicle
  • Advanced diagnostics
  • Service at all Mazda dealerships across the country
Under a Mazda extended warranty, all repairs must be done at a Mazda dealership. While there are more than 600 dealerships across the country, that pales in comparison to the number of
Toyota
and
Honda
dealerships, which both have thousands of dealerships for their customers to find service.

What’s covered

You get different levels of coverage depending on which Mazda Extended Confidence plan you choose, so we’ll go through what’s covered and what isn’t with each plan.
The Powertrain Confidence plan covers the following:
  • Engine: All lubricated internal components, cylinder block, cylinder head, timing belt, timing chain, balance shaft belt, gears, pulleys, guides, tensioners, engine mounts, oil pump, exhaust manifold, etc.
  • Manual transmission/transfer case: All internal lubricated components, flywheel, transmission mounts, etc.
  • Automatic transmission/transfer case: All internally lubricated parts, flex plate, vacuum modulator, transmission mounts, etc.
  • Front/rear drive axles: All internal lubricated components, drive shafts, axle bearings, drive axles, etc.
  • Seals and gaskets
  • Fluids as required for a repair
The Total Confidence plan mirrors your original factory warranty, offering you nearly identical coverage for nearly all parts and components on your Mazda.

What isn’t covered

While Mazda’s Total Confidence program covers most components, it won’t cover damage or malfunction that is out of the manufacturer’s control. Your extended warranty won’t cover any damage to tires or wheels, any damage resulting from improper fluid use, damage resulting from off-roading or racing, or any damage caused by environmental factors.
As well, your Mazda extended warranty will not cover routine
car maintenance
or service.

Duration

Along with your original factory warranty, your Mazda extended warranty can extend your coverage for up to 9 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
All Mazda Extended Confidence plans can run up to a maximum of 9 years or 100,000 miles driven. All warranties begin from the date of original purchase and expire whenever you hit those milestones.

Cost

The exact cost you pay for a Mazda Extended Confidence Warranty will depend on several factors, including the coverage level you choose, the warranty’s duration, whether you have a deductible or not, and any concessions you may or may not receive from your dealer when negotiating your extended warranty. In general, your Mazda warranty can cost anywhere from $950 to $1,500.
Perhaps not surprisingly, purchasing the Mazda Total Confidence plan will cost more than the Powertrain Confidence plan. You can choose to pay a $0 or $100 deductible. Opting for the latter means you will pay less overall for your warranty. Opting for the $0 deductible means you’ll pay a bit more for your warranty.
You can also transfer your extended warranty to another owner at no charge.

Is it worth getting a Mazda extended warranty?

Ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether purchasing a Mazda extended warranty is worth it. Going for either the Total Confidence or Powertrain Confidence plans can give you peace of mind. You'll be assured that in the event your vehicle suffers a significant mechanical breakdown, your repairs will be covered and you won’t be paying expensive bills out of pocket.
That said, there’s no guarantee you’ll need that extended warranty, as you could get lucky and not have any mechanical issues with your Mazda. As mentioned, Mazda is a brand renowned for its reliability.
RepairPal gives Mazda a solid 4/5 reliability rating and the average yearly repair for a Mazda is $338—significantly less than the average vehicle. So, whatever you’re thinking, do your research before signing on the dotted line for an extended warranty.
If you don’t want to splurge for a Mazda extended warranty but still want some protection after your original warranty expires, you can look into getting
mechanical breakdown insurance
(MBI). This type of coverage is similar to an extended warranty in that it will cover most major repairs (unrelated to wear and tear) should anything happen to your Mazda after your original warranty expires.
Also, MBI is regulated by outside regulatory bodies and is not subject to a dealership’s potential desire to squeeze customers for extra profit.
