I’ve been having trouble switching gears in my BMW, and I read online that it’s probably my transmission. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth getting a new one—I know they aren’t cheap. How much is a transmission replacement on a BMW?

The cost for a BMW transmission replacement service can fall anywhere between $3,000 to $7,000 or higher for parts and labor. For an exact estimate you’ll need to talk to your mechanic.
The high price tag for a transmission repair or replacement is due to the following:
- The nature of the repair: The mechanic will have to remove the engine in order to work on the transmission, so this drives the labor cost up significantly.
- The cost of the parts: The parts themselves are also very expensive, with prices ranging from $1,000 for used or rebuilt transmissions to $3,500 or higher for a brand-new part.
Unless your car is on the newer end, you could find yourself paying more than it’s worth to have the transmission repaired or replaced.
