How much does it cost to register a car in VA?

It's about time to renew my registration, but I’m not sure what the price tag is going to be. How much does it cost to register a vehicle in Virginia?

Renewing a vehicle’s registration in
Virginia
costs between $30-$45 depending on the size of the vehicle.
  • Passenger vehicles: $30-36
  • Pickup trucks: $35-$45
Keep in mind: If your decals are already expired on any vehicle, expect to pay a $10 late fee on top of these prices.
Since this is not your first time
registering the vehicle
, you don’t need much additional documentation. You will simply need
proof of insurance
—or proof that you’ve paid the
uninsured motorist fee
required by Virginia state law.
Most drivers can renew online in Virginia and enjoy a $1 discount. Otherwise, you can renew by mail or in-person at a DMV office for the standard fee.
