How much does it cost to get a timing chain replacement?

I read somewhere that the timing chain should be replaced when a car is really old. I haven’t done so before, and I think it’s about time. What is the cost of a timing chain replacement?

The average cost of replacing a timing chain is between $1,600 and $1,800 if you intend to have your vehicle repaired at a mechanic
If you have the knowledge to DIY the repair on your own, you’ll only need to pay around $600 to $800 for the new part. However, this is a task best left to those with ample experience working on cars.
If you suspect a faulty timing chain, watch out for the following symptoms:
  • Timing chain is noisy
  • Starting the vehicle is difficult
  • Engine is vibrating or shaking when idling
  • Engine is misfiring or performing poorly
  • Check engine light is illuminated
If some of these symptoms are persistent, bring your car to a mechanic as soon as possible. Fixing the issue promptly will prevent further damage to your vehicle.
Keep in mind: Timing chains are made to last the lifetime of your vehicle—so the repair may not be necessary at this time.
