How much does a quart of oil cost?

I’m going to change my car’s oil soon—how much can I expect a quart of oil to cost?

Good question! For the most part, the average cost for a quart of motor oil will fall somewhere between $3.50 and $6.00, depending on the brand, type of oil, and function. Some high-performance or high-mileage oils can even cost over $7.00 for a single quart.
As stated, there will be some price variation depending on the brand of oil, but it’s the oil’s function and the type of oil that really changes the cost:
  • Function: oils that are tailored to have a longer lifespan or endure a higher mileage before needing to be changed, or that are specifically suited for racing and high performance, tend to be more expensive
  • Type of oil: traditional oil usually falls on the lower end of the price range, while full synthetic oils tend to cost more—synthetic blends fall somewhere in the middle. Each has its pros and cons, so consider carefully before buying or asking a mechanic for their opinion.
Hopefully this helps!
