How much do electric cars cost in New Zealand?
My husband got a job offer in New Zealand so we’re moving from Western Australia in the summer. I saw some of the prices for EVs in NZ and they’re shockingly high! Is this a recent thing? How much do electric cars normally cost in New Zealand?

Congrats on the move! But unfortunately yes, New Zealand definitely has some high rates for their EVs. With the country’s lower-income economy and small market prices are about 50% more than what drivers would see in the US.
The Spinoff shares that most New Zealanders get their vehicles from the used cars imported in bulk. Electric vehicles don’t yet have much of a resale market, so brand new electric vehicles imported to the small island make for high prices.
If an EV is in your budget while living in New Zealand then it can provide some fuel savings. Since the costs are very high buying a new EV may not break even.
