Production numbers aren’t always exact, but it’s generally estimated that approximately 2,884,172
Jeep Cherokee XJs
were built between 1984 and 2001.It should be noted that production of the XJ in the United States ended in 2001—the model was marketed globally until 2014. For this question, however, we’ll deal with those units built between 1984 and 2001.

Throughout its production life, the Jeep Cherokee XJ was offered as both a 2-door and 4-door sportwagon capable of seating five passengers—customers could also choose to equip the XJ with either a rear-wheel or four-wheel drivetrain.
Despite encompassing only a single generation, the Jeep Cherokee XJ did see a major exterior and interior styling update in 1997. Ultimately, however, this facelift would not keep the XJ on par with its competitors and the model was eventually discontinued in 2001 (in the United States, at least).
