Surprisingly, the 2004 Mazda RX8 has no cylinders. Mazda equipped the 2004 RX8 with a rotary engine, which replaces traditional cylinders with rotors.
The 2004 iteration of the RX8 has a 1.3-liter rotary engine. It uses a pair of triangular-shaped rotors that spin in an asymmetric pattern throughout the combustion chamber. The main advantage is a significant reduction in weight, which can translate to more power and speed.
However, you should think of this engine as the little engine that could. Despite its small size, the 2004 Mazda RX8 rotary engine provides 238 horsepower, 197 pound-feet of torque, and a 0-60 mph clip of only 6.4 seconds.
