How long does renters insurance take to pay out?

I filed a claim with my insurer three weeks ago, right after my apartment was broken into. The thief got away with over $3,000 worth of my stuff—and now I’m sitting around waiting to hear back from my insurance company. How long will my renters insurance take to pay out?

Oh no! Break-ins are difficult to deal with on a variety of levels, and waiting to receive an insurance check can be frustrating. Payout on an insurance claim can take anywhere from a week or so after a claim is filed to more than a month. And if you have replacement cash value (RCV) coverage, you may receive your insurance money in stages as you submit receipts for each item and are reimbursed.
Here are some basic observations about filing claims and receiving payments on a claim:
  • File a claim as quickly as possible. Whenever an incident occurs—a peril in insurance terms—notify your insurance company as soon as you reasonably can. They will likely then require you to submit a claim within the next few days.
  • When filing a claim, make sure you’ve provided all the necessary documentation. Read the claim forms carefully and include required documents, such as receipts for items.
  • If you feel your insurance company is taking too long to deny or accept your claim—or to pay you—check your state laws. States have different laws governing how quickly an insurer must respond to a claim submission.
Here’s to hoping your claim is processed quickly so that you can begin to put the break-in behind you!
