To find out how far a Nissan can go on empty, you’re generally going to need to know a few pieces of information:
- How much fuel you have left
- Your gas tank capacity
- Your current fuel economy
Technically speaking, once your gas tank is actually empty, you won’t be able to go anywhere. But once your low level fuel light comes on, this usually means you have about 10% to 15% of fuel left in your gas tank. Generally, most vehicles are going to have between 30 to 50 miles of range left at this point.
If you want a slightly more precise prediction, you can do a little extra math. If you have a 14.5-gallon gas tank and your low fuel light comes on, you could estimate you have about 1.45 gallons left of gas (10% of the total capacity). If your Nissan is currently getting 27 mpg, you could estimate that your current fuel supply could take you about 39 miles before running out.
Of course, if you get stuck idling in traffic, your gas mileage could worsen and give you a little less range, so it’s best to use this as a rough estimate and fill up as soon as possible.
