How far can a car run on empty?

We were driving on the highway last night and our fuel light came on. There was no gas station nearby, and we nearly ran out of gas. How far can a car run on empty?

Glad you didn’t run out of gas! Most cars can run for 30 to 50 miles on empty. Once the fuel light illuminates, it’s best for the health of your vehicle if you fill it up as soon as you can.
When your vehicle reaches empty, dirt and other particles in your fuel talk are more likely to enter and clog your fuel pump, which could cause it to overheat and become less functional. While this won’t be an issue if it happens two or three times, you shouldn’t make it a habit.
Most experts recommend keeping your fuel tank at least 1/4 full at all times. This is the best for your engine and fuel injector health and can help you avoid range anxiety. Now go get gas!
