Modern automatic transmissions have a safety feature called brake-shift interlock, which prevents your BMW 4 series from changing gears in certain situations. But don’t worry, there’s a fairly simple workaround.
First, you’ll need to get into your trunk. You can use the hidden physical key inside your key fob to unlock the doors and the trunk if the key fob itself isn’t functional.
Next, look under the trunk lid for a little compartment. That’s your car’s towing kit. Inside you’ll find an orange gear release tool and a metal tow bar. You’ll need that gear release tool.
Now head into the driver’s seat and remove the plastic and rubber liners from your cupholder. You’ll need a flathead screwdriver, and these parts should snap in and out. If you’re having trouble, refer to your car’s owner’s manual for more information.
You’ll see a slot here for your gear release tool. Insert the tool and press it down while turning it clockwise. It’ll lock into place when the car is in neutral. And now you can push your Beemer where it needs to go!
