How do you sell a car from out of state?

I’m selling my car online and a buyer contacted me with a too-good-to-be-true kind of deal. I’d love to accept it, but they live out of state. What do I need to do to sell a car to someone out of state?

Congratulations on a great deal! It’s quite common to sell cars between states. All it really means is, you’ll need to take extra care to check all the boxes. Follow these steps to sell a car from out of state:
  • Photocopy or ask for a photo of the buyer’s license: You want to make sure they can legally drive. It will also make completing paperwork easier if the buyer is out of state.
  • Make a bill of sale for the car by titling a document Bill of Sale and listing the car’s make and model, year, VIN,
    odometer reading
, and the sales price. Once both parties sign the document, it’s a legal bill of sale!
  • Contact your DMV and ask about any local laws or requirements. Since every state has its own laws, you may need to complete additional steps. Contacting your local authorities will help ensure you don’t miss anything important.
  • Transfer the title to your buyer by completing transfer applications from both states. Since you’re selling out of state, you’ll need to complete both for the title transfer.
  • Buy a temporary tag so that your buyer can safely drive the car back to their state without it registered under your name.
  • Notify your DMV that you’ve sold the car if it’s applicable in your state.
Once sold, remember to remove the car from your insurance policy. Otherwise, you could be on the hook for unpaid premiums!
