How do you replace a seat belt retractor?
I thought my seat belt was just twisted, but it looks like I need an entirely new seat belt retractor instead. I want to save money on repairs, so I want to try to do it myself. How do you replace a seat belt retractor?

If the seat belt in your
car
needs a new retractor, you can follow these steps to replace it yourself at home:- Locate the retractor on your seat belt
- Remove the mounting screws on the retractor cover, followed by the cover itself
- Remove the retaining bolt mounting the retractor
- Remove the adjuster cover to gain access to the upper bolt
- Remove the adjuster, upper bolt, and pull off the shoulder belt
- Remove the lower lap belt mounting bolt and remove the retractor assembly and seat belt
- Compare the new and old retractors and belts to make sure they’re correct
- Install the new retractor and seat belt, mounting bolts, adjuster cover, and tighten bolts
- Test seat belt for operation
