How do you replace a Honda Civic radiator?

Is there a way for me to replace my Honda Civic’s radiator at home? Taking my car to a mechanic would probably be really expensive, but I need a new radiator in my car if I want to keep using it.

Performing repairs yourself is a great way to save on car expenses! Unfortunately, the cooling system can be a little complicated, so be careful and don’t be afraid to ask a professional for help if you run into problems. If you do decide to replace your
Honda Civic’s
radiator by yourself, you’ll need to follow these steps:
  • Make sure that your engine is cold, then disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery.
  • Find the bottom of your radiator under your car and place a drip pan under the drain plug.
  • Twist the drain plug until it comes out and let the radiator drain completely.
  • Next, carefully remove the radiator cap at the top of the radiator.
  • Loosen the clamp to remove the radiator overflow hose with a pair of pliers or a flathead screwdriver.
  • Remove the hose located at the lower corner of the radiator.
  • Find and unplug the radiator fan, then locate the main upper radiator support bracket.
  • Undo the main bolt to remove the radiator from your car.
  • Carefully, lower the new radiator into place and re-bolt the support bracket.
  • Reattach the radiator fan and hoses in reverse order.
  • Place a funnel in your new radiator and fill it with coolant.
  • Lower your car off of the jack stands and start your car with the hood still open. Watch for any leaks and keep an eye on your temperature gauge to ensure that your new radiator is functioning properly.
Congratulations! You’ve installed a new radiator in your Civic. Remember to contact a mechanic if you run into any problems during the replacement process, as the cooling system is highly pressurized and can be dangerous if incorrectly handled.
