How do you put a 2013 BMW X3 in neutral?
BMW’s reputation for reliability finally caught up with me—I got stranded on the highway with some car problems. I have a tow truck on the way, but they asked me to put the car in neutral. Is there a way to put a dead X3 in neutral?

We want to love them so badly, but it’s hard to deny how expensive BMWs are to maintain. Luckily, there’s a fairly easy way to put a 2013 BMW X3 in neutral when you can’t get it started. Here’s how:
- Look in the trunk for your BMW’s emergency roadside kit. (You may have to take your key out of the power fob to manually unlock the trunk!)
- You should find an ** gear release tool** in the emergency roadside kit. It has an L shape and is usually bright orange.
- Head to the driver seat and remove all the plastic covers from the cupholder in your center console. (You’ll probably need a flathead screwdriver—check the emergency roadside kit!)
- Stick the gear release tool into the notch beneath the cup holders and turn to release the gears and put the car in neutral.
Try not to worry if you can’t find the emergency roadside kit or if you’re unable to get to the gear release. An experienced tow person should be able to help put your 2013 BMW X3 in neutral if you can’t figure it out on your own. Their services may even be covered at no charge to you if you have
