How do you paint the chrome trim on a model car?
I’ve recently gotten interested in model cars, but I can’t quite get the chrome right on the model I’m working on right now. It’s a 1955 Mercury Montclair, so the chrome is a pretty important feature. What’s the trick for painting the chrome trim on model cars?

Model cars are such an interesting hobby! You have a few different options for painting chrome trim, and you might need to experiment a little to see what works best for you. Here are your options:
- Try a Molotow chrome pen—This is a paint pen that gives off a liquid chrome appearance. It’s good for detail work, but may not be the most efficient option if you have a lot of trim to cover.
- Apply bare metal foil—Carefully lay the foil over the trim, then press it down using a cotton swab. Then, score the foil with a utility knife.
- Use chrome paint—Carefully brush on a thick layer of this paint, then blow air across it to ensure the paint dries fully. Some popular brands include Alclad, Testors, and Tamiya.
