How do you keep a car cool without AC?

A week or so ago, I got stuck in really bad traffic. I couldn’t move for a long time. It was hot out, and my car overheated. I was told it was because I was blasting the AC. What can I do to keep cool without air conditioning if this happens again?

Bad traffic is so frustrating! Sweating while you wait can make things even less fun.
Here are some ways to keep a car cool without AC:
  • Tint your windows: Check with your local laws to see how much tint you’re allowed to have, but this can certainly help keep you cooler.
  • Handheld electric fan: You can buy portable fans online or at several major retailers. Many are rechargeable.
  • Old school fan: Paper fans or folding fans that can fit easily into your glove box or bag are another great option. A folded-up piece of paper can work in a pinch, too.
  • Ice water: Drinking cold water will not only cool you down but will also keep you hydrated, which is especially important when it’s hot out. You could also wet a towel with cold water and drape it around your neck.
