I’ve never taken my car through an automated car wash before, and I’m embarrassed that I have no idea how it works. How do you go through a car wash?

You’re certainly not the only person to have never used an automated car wash before, so don’t be embarrassed! Here are five easy steps for going to the car wash and what you should expect:
- Pull up to the car wash kiosk, which looks similar to a fast-food drive-thru.
- Select the cleaning package you want and pay the machine.
- Follow the signs and the arrows and drive up to the car wash entry. Sometimes there’s an additional attendant helping to wave you into place.
- Drive forward until your car’s front tires align with the car wash’s track system. Lights and signs will alert you when your vehicle is successfully positioned.
- Put your automatic transmission car in park or your manual transmission car in neutral. Release your foot from the brake and do not apply the emergency brake.
- Don’t forget to roll up your windows, then sit back and relax. It will be dark, loud, and your vehicle will rock a little as water jets and brushes scrub your car.
- Once the car wash track has moved your vehicle through the cleaning cycle, a sign will alert you to slowly exit the car wash.
