How do you dye seat belts?

I’m finally allowed to have my car on campus, and I’ve been trying to think of cute ways to make my car stand out and feel more like “me.” I saw someone dye their seat belts once, and I’ve been obsessed with the idea. How do you dye seat belts?

There are a few ways you can go about dyeing your car’s seat belts—but the most popular is by using a combination of lacquer thinner and spray paint to achieve a tie-dyed look.
Your OEM seatbelts are typically made of 100% polyester, a surprisingly tough fabric to dye. Lacquer thinner enables your spray paint to penetrate the harsh polyester of your seat belts.
Once you’ve got a bottle of lacquer thinner and your spray paint of choice, follow these steps:
  • Start by removing your seat belts entirely from your car. You should also remove any plastic covers or attachments so you’re left with just the seat belt.
  • Gently clean your seat belts with hot water and soap
  • Submerge the seat belts in a bowl of lacquer thinner, and let them soak for about 10 seconds
  • Remove your seat belts from the lacquer thinner and spray on paint in a tie-dye pattern (or however you wish) while the seat belts are still wet
  • Let your seat belts dry completely before reinstalling them in your car
