How do you drive a BMW in manual mode?

I recently purchased a used BMW, and as a former stick shift driver, I’m happy I have the option to use manual mode. I know how to drive an actual manual transmission, but how do I use manual mode on my BMW?

BMW
!
The Steptronic transmission in your BMW has three settings, and to drive a BMW in manual mode, you should:
  1. Put the car in drive. This is the standard automatic transmission mode.
  2. Push the transmission knob to the left. The transmission is now in DS or Drive Sport mode, which is automatic but allows for a more responsive driving experience.
  3. Push the transmission knob down while in DS mode. Your BMW is now in M or Manual mode.
Once in manual mode, you can shift gears by:
  • Pushing up or down on the transmission knob
  • Using the paddle shifters located on the steering wheel
