For an extra $795, the 2023 Ford Expedition can be equipped with the Heavy-Duty Tow Package. This ups its hauling capacity from 6,000 pounds to a very robust 9,300 pounds while adding a backup assist system, blind-spot information system, 3.73 rear-axle gearing, and an upgraded radiator.
On its own, a 2023 Ford Expedition is one tough SUV with brutish power and ample-enough towing capacity. However, add the Heavy-Duty Tow Package to handle pretty much any towing need you can dream up. The only trade-off is a slight increase in your upfront costs—but potentially more in your long-term

What’s included

The Ford Expedition Heavy-Duty Tow package includes the following:
  • Upgraded radiator for better transmission cooling
  • 3.73 rear-axle gearing
  • Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0
  • BLIS (Blind Spot Information System)

What it does

Put simply, Ford’s Heavy-Duty Tow package makes hauling a large object behind you easier than ever. Not only can you tow much more than with the Expedition’s standard towing capacity, but the Heavy-Duty Tow package also makes maneuvering much simpler.
First off, with the Heavy-Duty Tow package, your towing capacity increases from 6,000 pounds to 9,300 pounds. The Heavy-Duty Tow package also includes an improved radiator for better transmission cooling, which is essential when you’re hauling such large weights behind you.
Along with the increased towing capacity, the Heavy-Duty Tow package adds Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0, which makes reversing with a trailer attached to your SUV much easier. With just the turn of a knob, you’ll be able to steer your trailer in reverse while ensuring it remains attached and properly aligned. The backup assist feature also helps with braking and offers improved sway control.
Lastly, the Heavy-Duty Tow package provides what Ford calls BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), which checks your blind spots for you as you handle your trailer. If you miss one of the BLIS’ audible alerts, the system sends resistive feedback to the steering wheel, ensuring you stay on the ball when hauling.

Is the Heavy-Duty Tow package worth it?

If you’re intent on towing a trailer with more than 6,000 pounds-worth of equipment, the Heavy-Duty Tow package’s power boost will be a god-send. At the best of times, reversing with a trailer on your truck’s rear end can be a nightmare, but the package’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0 makes such maneuvering considerably easier.
The only real downside to the Heavy-Duty Tow package is its effect on the Expedition’s braking, which already feels a little untrustworthy. The additional weight you can tow with the Heavy-Duty Tow package won’t help, but it’s a good reminder to drive with extra caution when towing, giving yourself more room to stop with larger loads.
Lastly, you can expect to hear a lot of dings, buzzes, chirps, and squeals from the packages included safety features. But while these may get a biy tiring, remember what they are designed for—your safety! At the end of the day these annoying little sounds make the Ford Expedition Heavy-Duty Tow package all the more worth it for the security and convenience they provide while towing.

The bottom line

If you regularly need to tow more than 6,000 pounds, then the Ford Expedition Heavy-Duty Tow package is a must. Not only do you get more power, but you also get handy features to ease your towing experience as much as possible. Even if you don’t need to tow such heavy loads, the safety packages of the feature are more than worth it.
