How do you dispose of a used car battery?
Where can I go to dispose of a used car battery? My wife changed out our old car battery at home, and now I'm stuck with a dead battery. Where I can I throw it out?

Good question! While car batteries are hazardous, meaning that you can’t simply throw them away, you have disposal options. You can either bring it directly to a recycling depot or drop it off with a retailer.
First, you should put the battery in a thick plastic bag.
Grease, grime
, and battery fluid can sometimes leak out from old batteries. These substances are both damaging to the environment and nearly impossible to scrub out of whatever they stain. One way or another, the battery needs to find its way to a recycling plantequipped to deal with batteries, which leads us to your options:
- Bring it directly to a recycling plant. This option will take some effort on your part. You’ll need to call them to make sure they take batteries and ask if they have a pick-up service. The biggest pro is that some plants may pay you for the battery.
- Drop it off at a retailer. This is likely your best option. Drop off the battery at your local auto-retail store, and they’ll take care of it for you. If you bring your receipt for the new battery back to the shop, they may even reimburse you for a portion of the new battery cost.
