How do you clean mold off a car’s interior?
I bought an old car with engine issues as a weekend project, but I’ve found some mold growing on the interior. I want to get rid of the mold before I start fixing it up. How do you clean mold off a car’s interior?

Even if you have to clean it up a bit first, you must be excited to have a new weekend project! The good news is that cleaning the mold from the vehicle’s interior is easy!
You can use a commercial mold remover to clean the interior, but you should first test it on a hidden area to ensure it won’t damage the car’s interior. Alternatively, you can use distilled white vinegar and a scrub brush to clean the interior.
If you choose to use distilled white vinegar to remove the mold, follow these steps:
- Fill a spray bottle with distilled white vinegar
- Put on a mask to avoid inhaling the harmful particles
- Put the car in the sun and open all the doors to air out any spores
- Remove trash and any personal belongings from the vehicle
- Inspect the interior and locate the areas that need treatment
- Break up large clusters of mold using a scrub brush and vacuum the interior
- Use your spray bottle to saturate the affected areas thoroughly
- Use your scrub brush to work the vinegar into the affected areas and use more vinegar as needed
- Let the treated areas completely dry and leave the doors open
