How do you check the transmission fluid on a Honda CR-V?

My 2009 Honda CR-V has a rebuilt transmission. How do I check the transmission fluid to make sure it doesn’t have any leaks?

Before you check the transmission fluid, make sure your engine is at its usual operating temperature. You can check after you complete a drive, or let your engine idle for around 10 minutes to warm it up. Then:
  • Park your CR-V on a flat surface. Start the engine and shut it off again, giving about one minute before proceeding to the next step.
  • Pull out the dipstick from the transmission and wipe it clean. The transmission fluid stick will have a yellow coating at its top.
  • Reinsert the dipstick into its slot on the transmission.
  • Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level using the metal grooves on the stick. The fluid level should fall somewhere between the upper and lower grooves.
  • Add transmission fluid, if necessary. Pour directly into the dipstick hole until the fluid level reaches between the two grooves.
Make sure you are using a Honda-genuine transmission fluid (ATF-Z1) on your CR-V. Since you like taking care of your car, spare a minute to review your car insurance policy. Download the
