How long does it take to replace an O2 sensor?

I’m scheduled to take my car into the shop to have the O2 sensor replaced tomorrow. But there’s somewhere I need to be about an hour after I’m supposed to be at the mechanic. Am I going to be able to get to my other appointment? How long does it usually take to replace an O2 sensor?

Great question! It can definitely be tricky to schedule your day around a trip to the auto shop. How long it takes to replace an O2 sensor depends on how busy the mechanic is that day–and how experienced they are. Most of the time, it will only take a skilled mechanic about 30 minutes to replace an O2 sensor. In some cases, however, it can take up to an hour or more.
On average, replacing an O2 sensor should take 20-40 minutes with a median time of 30 minutes. But you could always get a technician who isn’t very experienced or hasn’t done that particular procedure before. In which case, it can sometimes take a full hour.
You also can never know for sure how busy the mechanic is going to be on a given day. It may be a bit before they get to your car. So, as for whether or not you’re able to make your other appointment, I would say that it’s entirely possible–but only if everything goes just right. Assuming the other appointment isn’t too far away.
Keep in mind that even if the job is finished in half an hour, the mechanic will still probably charge you for a full hour of labor.
While you’re waiting for your O2 sensor to be replaced, take a few minutes to review your

policy. In the half-hour or so that you spend waiting, you could save hundreds on your car insurance.
