The fam and I are going kayaking this weekend. How do I tie a kayak to our car roof racks?

Sounds like a blast! Since you already have a car roof rack, all you’ll need to secure your kayak to your roof is cam straps. Make sure you pick up a set that’s at least 12 feet long to secure the kayak as best as possible. Then:
  • Flip the kayak upside down and raise it onto the roof racks. You may need a second set of hands for this.
  • After the kayak is in position, begin to secure it by wrapping the straps around the roof racks and the side of the kayak. Add additional lines to the bow and stern to secure the kayak laterally. This is especially important if you’re planning to drive on busy roads.
  • Make sure the straps are not tangled and are lying flat against the bottom of the kayak. Then, slide the straps through the buckle and tighten until the kayak feels secure. To release the buckles, press the release button and slide the strap out.
  • Once you’ve tightened the straps, make sure to tuck or tie the remaining portion of the strap to the vehicle to prevent them from flapping in the wind as you drive.
Then you are ready for your kayaking trip! If you’re worried about getting stranded on your drive,
