How do I take my cosigner off my car loan?

I've built up my credit since I got my first car loan, and I don't need a cosigner anymore. How do I remove them?

“That’s great news! If you want to take the cosigner off your
car loan
, first check your loan contract and see if there’s a cosigner release option. Some reasons this may be allowed are:
  • A certain number of on-time payments
  • If your cosigner is not the primary borrower
  • If the cosigner’s credit score has dipped
You could also refinance the loan or pay off the loan for a roundabout way of taking the cosigner off the loan.
You’ll also want to make sure that you’re financially capable of paying the car loan, as well as other expenditures like maintenance and
car insurance
.
