How do I reverse my car correctly during a driving test?

I’m taking my driver’s test in a few days, and I’m a bit worried about reversing. I know it’s going to be a part of the test, but I don’t know what they’re going to be looking for. So how do I reverse correctly?

It’s totally understandable to be nervous about reversing. During the test, you’ll likely be demonstrating how to reverse in a straight line, and how to reverse without striking a curb. You shouldn’t have to travel too far—your examiner just wants to see how well you handle the car in reverse.
Before the test, if your car comes equipped with a
backup camera
, be sure to verify whether or not you’ll be permitted to use it during the test. Some states allow it, but others do not.
As far as reversing itself is concerned, be sure to follow the proper procedures:
  • Make sure your rear and
    side mirrors
    are properly adjusted.
  • The car should be at a complete stop before you shift into reverse.
  • Keep your seatbelt on, but look over your right shoulder directly behind you, using your right hand to help.
  • Your left hand should be at the top of the steering wheel in the 12:00 position.
  • Reverse by lifting your foot off of the
    brake pedal
. It’s not recommended that you move it over to the gas pedal for your test—if you panic, or need to brake suddenly, you may accidentally accelerate.
  • If you have to turn the steering wheel to correct yourself, remember to turn it in the direction you want the car to travel in.
If you’re still unsure, remember, practice makes perfect! And if you’re still nervous, at least make sure your
collision insurance
is up to date. The good news is, finding great (and affordable) insurance is much easier than reversing if you’ve got the
