How do I retrieve my car from the impound?

I accidentally parked my car in a fire lane and when I came back, it was gone. How do I get my car out of the impound?

Having your car impounded puts you in a bit of a predicament, but it’s not too difficult to overcome if you know the right steps! To retrieve your car from the impound, start by figuring out where your car is.
In your case, you can at least look around the area where the car was impounded for a sign that says where the car might have been taken. This process becomes much harder if your car was impounded for unpaid parking tickets,
speeding tickets
, or other citations.
If you don’t see a sign, call the local police precinct to see if any cars have been impounded. You’ll need to provide either the vehicle identification number (VIN) or the license plate number. If they have no record, you may have to wait a few hours until all the paperwork has been processed.
Once you have the contact information for the impound lot, make a call to see if they have your car. If they do, you’ll need to gather the proper documentation to get it out, including:
  • Driver’s license
  • Proof of insurance
  • Whatever else the impound lot requires
Once you’re there, you’ll need to pay your fees. If you don’t have the cash, you can usually leave your car in impound for up to 30 days. Just remember that fees compound over time, so may want to get the car out as soon as possible to avoid massive fees.
If you need some cash to get your car out of impound in the future, one great way is to review your car insurance policy every six months. To do this easily, check out the
