How do I repair wet brakes on a Ford tractor?

I have a newer Ford tractor, but recently I noticed that the brakes squeak loudly. My neighbor told me that I likely have what’s called brake chatter, but that’s just a theory. I believe that the tractor has wet brakes. How do I repair them?

Sorry to hear about the squeaky brakes on your Ford tractor! If you have a newer tractor, it likely has wet brakes, which is another name for a hydraulic braking system located within the interior of the body. Wet brakes are in contrast to dry brakes, which are exposed to the elements and located on the exterior of the tractor.
Thankfully, repairing brake chatter on a Ford tractor is often as simple as draining and replacing the hydraulic fluid. To change the hydraulic fluid, follow these steps.
  • Grab a bucket and put it below the hydraulic fluid cap, which is located on the underside of the tractor about midway on the body.
  • Remove the cap and allow the hydraulic fluid to drain.
  • Depending on the model of your Ford tractor, you may have as many as three plugs to drain all the fluid.
  • Buy a five-gallon bucket of tractor hydraulic fluid, making 100% sure it’s for tractors only.
  • Open the transmission reservoir cap, which is located next to the gear shift.
  • Pour the entire five-gallon bucket into the reservoir using a funnel.
  • Dispose of the old hydraulic fluid properly per the instructions on the hydraulic fluid bucket.
Before you dive into this repair, assuming that it’s something more severe than brake chatter, seriously consider your level of mechanical knowledge. It’s a highly involved repair and novice mechanics can cause more harm than good. If you’re not confident, a tractor repair shop can replace the wet brakes for about $5,000 including parts and labor. However, brake chatter is much easier to fix.
While fixing your wet brakes is quite a process, your car’s dry brakes aren’t exactly easy to fix either. So if you own a car and have noticed that the brakes are a bit soft, think about either getting an
extended warranty
or upping your car insurance coverage to protect your asset.
