How do I put a Ford Focus in neutral with a dead battery?

I have a Ford Focus with a dead battery. Unfortunately, it’s in such a position that I can’t reach the battery to take it out or charge it. It also won’t let me shift into neutral. What’s the trick to putting a Ford Focus in neutral if it has a dead battery?

Here’s how to shift a Ford Focus with a dead battery to neutral:
  1. From the driver’s seat, find the plate with gear symbols (like D, N, and R) around the gear shift.
  2. Pry up this plate with a flathead screwdriver. You should see a little white lever in the compartment underneath.
  3. Push this lever forward with your screwdriver.
  4. As you hold it in place, use your other hand to shift the car into neutral.
