How do I clean pee out of car seats?

My toddler is still learning how to use the potty. On the way home from daycare yesterday, he couldn’t hold it in and now the car seat smells like pee. How do I clean pee out of car seats?

Oh dear, growing up is hard—almost as hard as being a parent! To clean pee out of car seats, try a solution of white vinegar and dish soap.
Now, we’re assuming that your toddler was secured in an age-appropriate car seat. If so, many car seats have a removable cover that can be washed. If yours does, just unfasten it and toss it in the wash.
If your car seat cover cannot be removed—or if the urine made its way onto the actual upholstery of the seat below—don’t worry. First, grab an old toothbrush and some rags. Then, mix up a solution of 1 TB vinegar, 1 TB dish soap, and 2 cups of warm water.
Once your supplies are ready, follow these steps:
  • Open the windows
  • Blot the urine with paper towels or rags
  • Spray and lightly scrub the area
  • Sprinkle a bit of baking soda if the smell lingers
  • Blot and allow to dry completely
Note that this advice applies to cloth seats only. You may need specialty cleaning solutions if you have leather or suede seats.
Don’t delay this cleanup! Urine can set into fabric fast. Make time for this project ASAP to save yourself a headache later on.
