Dodge Nitro 3rd Row Seating Review

The Dodge Nitro doesn’t offer an option for 3rd-row seating, but there are some similar models that fit the bill for big families if you’re looking for more room.

The
Dodge Nitro
is an eye-catching addition to the sometimes-boring midsize SUV market, but if you’re looking for a model that can fit more than five, you’re better off looking somewhere else: the Nitro doesn’t include a third-row seating option in any of its trims.
With front-row legroom of 40.5 inches and second-row legroom of 39.4 inches, along with 29.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, the Nitro offers plenty of space for its passengers and whatever they might bring along with them—so long as they are not planning on bringing along a sixth (or seventh) passenger.
Luckily, there are models considered very comparable to the Nitro that do offer space for the whole family.

What other midsize SUVs offer 3rd-row seating?

The Dodge Nitro may not offer any third-row seating options, but there are plenty of midsize SUVs that do. Many of them have room for anywhere between seven and eight passengers, and they tend to surpass the Nitro on other fronts as well.
Here are some of the best picks for midsize SUVs with more space, as well as how they each compare to the Nitro.

Acura MDX

With the 2023
Acura MDX
model starting at $49,195, this one will set you back quite a bit more than the Nitro. The Nitro’s latest model came out in 2011 and is priced by Kelly Blue Book starting at $6,682.
However, the newer MDX also boasts a more refined interior than the Nitro, complete with luxury materials and a 290-hp V6 engine. And when it comes to comfort, the Acura MDX offers quite a bit more space than the Nitro’s 102.5 cubic feet. Here are the most important measurements in the MDX:
  • Third row: 30.9 inches of legroom, 35.6 inches of headroom
  • Second row: 38.5 inches of legroom, 38.3 inches of headroom
  • First row: 41.4 inches of legroom, 38.1 inches of headroom
  • Total passenger volume: 132.7 cubic feet

Toyota Highlander

Another newer model with a higher price tag, the Toyota Highlanderoffers those looking for extra space the added benefit of smooth handling, advanced infotainment system, and an impressive suite of technology
The turbocharged 4-cylinder engine won’t break any records, but many drivers prioritizing space for the whole family are willing to sacrifice speed. Here’s how much room the Highlander offers:
  • Third row: 27.7 inches of legroom, 36.1 inches of headroom
  • Second row: 41 inches of legroom, 39.4 inches of headroom
  • First row: 42 inches of legroom, 41.2 inches of headroom
  • Total passenger volume: 141.3 cubic feet

Kia Sorento

One of the higher-rated midsize SUVs, the latest
Kia Sorento
starts at a reasonable $30,885. For that price, drivers can get one of the most smooth and satisfying rides around.
In addition to top-of-the-line handling, the Sorento offers plenty of powertrain options, including an option for a plug-in hybrid, as well as room for all with measurements like:
  • Third row: 29.6 inches of legroom, 36.8 inches of headroom
  • Second row: 41.7 inches of legroom, 39.1 inches of headroom
  • First row: 41.4 inches of legroom, 40.3 inches of headroom
  • Total passenger volume: 121.3 cubic feet
